지구의 자연학은 근대에 여러 학문들이 융합적으로 맞물리면서 시작되었다. 현대 과학자들이 의식적으로 학제간 융합을 해야 한 것과 달리, 자연사혁명의 선구자들에게는 융합적 사유가 자연스러운 사고의 과정이었다.
The natural sciences on the planet originated from the integration of various disciplines in modern times. Unlike contemporary scientists who have to intentionally merge interdisciplinary fields, the pioneers of the natural history revolution naturally embraced fusion thinking as part of their process.

The field of planetary studies seeks to move beyond the confines of the Western modern era by striving for a unified perspective on the histories of humanity and the natural world. To achieve this goal, it is essential to understand the intellectual frameworks of both human history and natural history in order to establish a coherent foundation of knowledge.

레비스트로스는 브라질을 다녀온 후 16년이 지나서 《슬픈 열대》를 세상에 내보였다. 클리퍼드 기어츠는 《슬픈 열대》가 “동시에 발생해서 서로 경쟁하고,때로는 같은 층위에 존재하면서도 상호 간섭하는 텍스트이다.”라고 말했다. 여행기, 민족지, 철학, 개혁주의, 상징주의 문학의 다섯 가지 층위가 동시에 존재한다는 것이다. 그러나 《슬픈 열대》는 무었보다도 열대 여행기다. 기본적으로이 고전은 열대에 관한 그의 인식론을 담고 있는 여행기이다.
Lévi-Strauss
Lévi-Strauss introduced "Tristes Tropiques" to the public 16 years following his visit to Brazil. According to Clifford Geertz, "Tristes Tropiques“ is a text that coexists and at times clashes with itself, operating on multiple levels simultaneously. It encompasses five layers: travelogue, nationalism, philosophy, reformism, and symbolic literature. However, above all, "Tristes Tropiques" primarily functions as a tropical travelogue. Fundamentally, this renowned work serves as a travelogue that encapsulates his epistemological views on tropical environments.
오귀스트 콩트
콩트가 구상했던 사회학은 융합적 사유의 결과였다. 콩트가 구상했던 실증과학의 위계는 수학, 천문학, 물리학, 화학, 생물학, 사회학의 순서였다. 콩트의 사회학은 이러한 자연과학 위에 기반하고 있었다.
August Comte
The sociology conceptualized by Comte was a product of convergent thinking. Comte envisioned a hierarchical order of empirical sciences, starting with mathematics, followed by astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology, and ultimately sociology. Comte's sociological framework was grounded in the principles of natural sciences.
